The top 12 in tech of 2014

Narrowing down the top 12 tech products of the year is no small task. The breadth and depth of the consumer technology world gets larger every year, now encompassing such novel categories as wearables, 3D printing and, uh, dongles.

And yet, in a year where much of the buzz was centered around these new fields, more mature product categories shined the most brightly. Smartphones, laptops and e-readers saw some truly exemplary devices join their ranks. And among software, the most recent iterations of well-known franchises captured our attention the most.

YouTube finally lets you make GIFs without leaving YouTube

Without any fanfare, YouTube has introduced a built-in GIF creation tool for selected videos and channels.

Andy Baio, a former CTO of Kickstarter, first spotted the update on Thursday.

The rollout is limited for the time being. The option appears on videos in the PBS Digital Studios' Ideas channel, as pointed out in the tweet above, under each video's "Share" option. The option is not available on Mashable's channel or several others that we checked.

If you have ever created short, looping animations, you will appreciate the simplicity of YouTube's tool. At the top is a film scrubber, which displays a series of frames from the video above. The frame tool moves along the strip as the video plays above and can be grabbed and dragged to any point in the video. It defaults to a three-second grab, but can be stretched out to six seconds or condensed to 0.3 seconds. ...

Snapchat geofilters: How they work and why they matter

Snapchat users have long been known to be a creative bunch.

But recently the company has tried to appeal directly to those creative instincts as it announced it was opening up its geofilters feature to everyone.

Geofilters are illustrations that can be overlaid onto photos while in specific locations. It's a feature the company has been experimenting with for some time, though it wasn't available to all users until last week's update
